OAKLAND, Calif.Numi Organic Tea introduced its Fair Trade Practices (FLP) program, advocating social responsibility throughout the supply chain. The proprietary verification program serves as an ongoing improvement model, focused on labor and workplace conditions.

The program was created by Numi and SCS Global Services (SCS) in 2007. Core areas of focus include:

  • Hiring and employment practices, consisting of hiring and wages standards, minimum and maximum working hours, freedom of associations, no child or forced labor and vacation and leave allocation.

  • Workplace conditions including, sanitation standards, adequate housing, worker training, occupational health and safety and availability of human resources services.

  • Sustainable agriculture with organic certification serving as a prerequisite for the program, ensuring workers and communities safety from chemicals.

  • Worker and worker family access to services such as, education, health services and transportation.

The FLP program can be applied to any agricultural supply chain with annual third-party verification audits conducted.

In 2013, the company will have six organic pu-erh tea blends, the Indulgent Pu-erh Tea Collection gift set, High Mountain Black Brewed Iced Tea and Chinese Breakfast Tea verified Fair Labor. Numi plans to expand the program within its own supply chain, as well as to other brands across multiple categories this year via the Numi Foundation.
