A recent New York Times article says candy sales are providing sweet relief from the day-to-day dealings of a downturn economy. Candy stores across the country are reporting a robust run on goodies such as Swedish fish, Necco wafers, red licorice and chocolate. According to the article, there may be historic precedent to the recessionary strength of the candy business—Snickers, Tootsie Pops, Mars bars with almonds and Three Musketeers made their debuts in the early 1930s. Consumers, apparently, are still flocking to their old favorites for a bit o’ nostalgia and respite from a gloomy job market.
