GOLDEN, Colo.A majority of Americans are unaware of key facts concerning bone health and disease, according to a new study conducted by Opinion Research Corp. for GTC Nutrition. The study reported 86 percent of Americans believe women are at greater risk from breast, ovarian or uterine cancer than from fractures linked to osteoporosis, while facts show a womans risk of osteoporotic fracture is greater than all three cancers combined. In addition, a great majority of respondents were unaware that the body only absorbs approximately 30 percent of calcium consumed from the diet, and that almost all teen-aged girls are not getting enough calcium.

These survey findings underscore the opportunity Americans have to increase their overall health and well-being by learning more about bone health and the factors that influence it, including calcium absorption, said Coni Francis, Ph.D., R.D., scientific affairs manager for GTC (www.gtcnutrition.com). Our goal is to help consumers be more aware of the risks and also realize the easy choices they can make in the supermarket aisle to help build stronger bones.
