MEDFORD, Mass.In a study conducted by researchers at TuftsUniversity, Medford, Mass., levels of homocysteine and methylmalonic acid were much higher in individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency and high blood folate levels, compared to those individuals who were deficient in B12 but had normal folate levels (Proc Nat Acad Sci. 2007;104(50):19995-20000). The researchers suggested high folate levels may interfere with B12-containing enzymes, thus worsening the B12 deficiency.
