DESIO, ItalyGnosis announced its folate derivative Quatrefolic® won the Most Effective Strategic Product Development" award at the Nutraceutical Business & Technology (NBT) Awards, presented on May 11 during the Vitafoods Exhibition. The judging panel reviewed the 18 candidate ingredients in areas including patent design, product development, flexibility for consumers, market and consumer trends, strategic market orientation, project planning and execution, and overcoming R&D challenges.

Gnosis research team identified glucosamine as a new salt of the biologically active form of folate (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, with solubility of 100 times more than calcium salt. Quatrefolics greater solubility and stability improve flexibility in formulation, also allowing for combination formulations with vitamins and minerals. The ingredient is GRAS (generally recognized as safe) and was recognized by the U.S. FDA as a new dietary ingredient (NDI) in November 2010. Quatrefolic is covered by two international patent applications covering the chemical entity and the process to obtain it.

Paolo Malesani, commercial director, Gnosis, commented, We are very honored to receive this award that reinforces our belief that Quatrefolic, the fourth generation of folate, will represent a real award for the final consumer."
