MAYWOOD, Ill.Just in time for New Years revelry, Dr. Aaron Michelfelder of Loyola University Health System offers the following tips for avoiding and curing a hangover.

In order to prevent even getting a hangover, Dr. Michelfelder recommends not overindulging on alcohol to begin with. Five drinks for men, three drinks for women over a three-hour period is within reason. In addition, he recommends taking ibuprofen to prevent inflammation, eating before drinking, drinking a glass of water after each alcoholic drink, and taking a B vitamin.

If all that fails and you wake up feeling the pain, do this:

·        Take another B vitamin.

·        Drink lots of water.

·        Exercise. During vigorous exercise, blood circulates three times as fast as it does when you are sitting on the couch. The faster you circulate blood through your liver and kidneys, the faster your body will remove the toxins.

Two things that dont work: coffee and another alcoholic drink, aka hair of the dog.
