Vitamin B12 Deficiency May Lead to Infertility, Miscarriage
AFULA, Israel--In the March Journal of Reproductive Medicine (46:209-12, 2001) (www.jreprodmed.com),researchers found that high homocysteine levels stemming from a lack of vitaminB12 may lead to miscarriage and even infertility. Researchers, led by MichaelBennett from Ha'Emek Medical Centre here, studied the obstetric histories of 14patients with B12 deficiency. They found that infertility (two to eight years)was experienced in four patients and miscarriage in 11. The doctors concludedthat miscarriages occurred when the vitamin deficiency first developed; however,a more prolonged deficiency appeared to lead to infertility.
