MILWAUKEE—Winter in Wisconsin brings a ton of snow, but almost no ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, making it challenging for the body to make vitamin D—an essential vitamin for heart, bone and mental wellness. To address this issue, a leading non-profit health care organization is encouraging patients to take vitamin D supplements. Aurora Health Care trained staff across its pharmacy, health care and urgent care centers about vitamin D, dosages and effects on health conditions. “We are the first integrated health care system to advocate for community wide use of vitamin D,” said Dr. John Whitcomb, Aurora's medical director for patient access. “We want everyone in the state of Wisconsin to take vitamin D during the winter.”
