SHORT HILLS, N.J.The proprietary hot red pepper extract Capsimax fromOmniActive Health Technologies promoted a lipolytic effect as measured by an increase in free fatty acids and glycerol in blood compared to placebo in a recent study (Lipids in Health and Disease 2010, 9:72doi:10.1186/1476-511X-9-72). The researchers, lead by Richard J Bloomer from the University of Memphis, found Capsimax had no adverse impact on heart rate, systolic or diastolic blood pressure, nor were there observed side effects related to gastric upset or discomfort.

Ten men and 10 women participated in the randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study. Upon overnight fasting for more than 12 hours, subjects were given either 100 mg Capsimax or a placebo. Blood samples taken at various time-points: 30 minutes pre-ingestion; two hours post ingestion of either Capsimax or placebo; one minute following the cessation of 30 minutes of exercise; and 90 minutes after exercise. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, catecholamine data, free fatty acid levels and glycerol values were measured at all blood collection times.

The researchers found plasma free-fatty acids increased after ingestion at two hours (pre-exercise) and one minute post-exercise compared to placebo, and plasma glycerol concentrations increased significantly four hours after ingestion. They observed no side effects related to gastric upset or discomfort in the four hours after ingestion, even after a 12-hour fast.

According to OmniActive, these higher levels of free fatty acid levels and glycerol indicate lipolytic activity due to the capsaicinoids present in Capsimax.

"This study shows very promising results surrounding Capsimax's ability to help burn fat, while substantiating the need for supplementation with Capsimax in combination with exercise," sated Jayant Deshpande, Ph.D., chief technology officer, OmniActive Health Technologies Ltd. We are pleased to be adding to findings of an earlier study where Capsimax Plus Blend supplementation combined with exercise showed higher levels of calories burned. Both studies revealed positive results for these key components to successful weight management. " He added, "Findings also confirm Capsimax can effectively be used in formulations for weight management and sports nutrition."

Capsimax Capsicum Extract is a proprietary encapsulated form of concentrated natural capsicum fruit extract manufactured from hot red peppers. Capsimax utilizes the patented encapsulation technology OmniBead to deliver functional levels of the active principles of capsicum, capsaicinoids, while minimizing the oral and gastric irritation often experienced with unprotected hot red pepper product applications. OmniActive noted research in both animal and human subjects on capsicum and capsaicinoids indicated significant effects for diet and weight management, including increased energy expenditure, enhanced carbohydrate and fat burning and reduced caloric intake.
