CARLSBAD, Calif.A patented extract blend from orange peel and phellodendron tree (Citrofen, Next Pharmaceuticals) reduced arthritis pain and improved mobility for those suffering from knee osteoarthritis and also assisted in weight loss. The double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 80 overweight and normal weight participants.

Researchers measured comfort, stiffness and mobility with the Lequesne Algofunctional Index (LAI) and measured participants serum C-reactive protein (CRP) (an indicator of inflammation). Over the eight week trial period, CitrofenT showed a highly significant (p<0.001) reduction in both the LAI (46.1-percent reduction in the overweight group; 31.9-percent reduction in the normal weight group) and CRP concentration (48.9-percent reduction in the overweight group; 44.3-percent reduction in the normal weight group). In addition, overweight subjects with knee osteoarthritis significantly lowered their weight and body mass index (BMI, 5.1 percent, p<0.001) while on CitrofenT; normal weight subjects did not.
