BENICIA, Calif. Dolichos biflorus and Piper betle extracts may be effective in weight management, according to a study published online in Lipids in Health and Disease journal. Using the herbal formulation LOWAT (from InterHealth Nutraceuticals), researchers studied 50 subjects in an eight-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind trial (Lipids Health Dis. 2012 Dec 27;11:176. doi: 10.1186). Participants either received 300 mg of LOWAT three times daily or placebo.

After eight weeks of supplementation, the LOWAT group averaged 2.5 kg of weight loss, in addition to other significant weight-loss markers. The supplemented subjects experienced a 15-percent increase in adiponectin, which is inversely correlated to body fat. Compared to placebo, they also had a 17-percent decrease in gherlin levels, a peptide hormone produced in the stomach.

While LOWAT is one of InterHealth's flagship weight management ingredients, the company recently earned first place honors at the 2013 Scripps Natural Supplement Conference for its new research on UC-II®, an undenatured type 2 collagen ingredient for joint health.
