BENICIA, Calif.Merastin, at proprietary ingredient form InterHealth Nutraceuticals, significantly reduced body weight, waist and hip size in  two weeks, according to data from two randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled studies presented at Obesity 2011, Obesity Societys 29th annual scientific meeting in Orlando, FL, Oct. 1-5.

By the end of the study, Merastin significantly reduced weight by 11.5 pounds, and waist and hip size by 4.7 inches and 2.5 inches, respectively," said Judith Stern, Sc.D, distinguished professor in the departments of nutrition and internal medicine/division of clinical nutrition and metabolism at the University of California, Davis, who led the study. In contrast, placebo reduced weight by 3.3 pounds and waist and hip size by 2.4 inches and 1.2 inches, respectively."

Study participants walked five days a week and followed a standard calorie diet (2,000 kcal/day) as opposed to being placed on a low-calorie diet, which is a common practice in weight-control studies. By taking this approach, we wanted to address, as well as to avoid, the well-documented failure of individuals to maintain their diet restrictions," Stern said. This is the classic yo-yo effect seen in many diet restriction programs. Therefore, we believe that the results derived from this study are more readily applicable to personalized diet planning, and emphasize the need to combine a healthy lifestyle change that includes improved nutrition and moderate increases in physical activity together with Merastin supplementation to achieve optimal results." Stern is the co-founder and former vice-president of the American Obesity Association, which merged with the Obesity Society in 2006.

InterHealth will be showcasing Merastin, a blend of two plant extracts, Sphaeranthus indicus flower heads and Garcinia mangostana fruit rind, at the upcoming Supply Side West show in Las Vegas.

Merastin was recently introduced in a new product from Life Extension.
