TIENEN, BelgiumBENEOs Orafti® Synergy1 lead to lower energy intake in overweight and obese adults, according to a new study presented at the 18th European Congress on Obesity (ECO), which took place in Istanbul from May 25 to 28, 2011. The oligofructose-enriched inulin prebiotic can be formulated in dairy, supplements, food and powder products.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over intervention study, led by Prof. Rob Welch (University of Ulster, Northern Ireland),   included 36 overweight or obese men and women volunteers, each receiving 6 g of Orafti®Synergy1 twice daily, at breakfast and lunch as a supplement dissolved in a beverage, or a placebo (maltodextrin) over the course of three weeks. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of Synergy1 on energy intake as well as on appetite sensations in those participants. While energy intake was assessed at the beginning and end of each treatment phase, appetite ratings were evaluated through visual analogue scales (VAS).

It was shown that Synergy1 intake resulted in a significantly lower energy intake in all subjects (-3.6 percent), and when stratified by gender, this result was even more apparent in women.

Joseph ONeill, executive vice president of sales and marketing for BENEO-Orafti Inc., recently addressed the prebiotic market in a recent INSIDER article.
