Real-Time Nutrition, Theres an App for That
March 7, 2011
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.Finding out whether the nutritional value of a decadent dessert you are about to order may be easier than you thought thanks to engineers who are designing a mobile application that delivers real-time nutrition info based on a photo of the food.
As reported on WGHP, engineers at New Jersey-based Viocare are working on a smartphone app that identifies the food and determines what was eaten in terms of portion control, calories, salt and sugar intake and hundreds of other characteristics.
You'll be able to look down at any moment and say, 'Am I in sync with what I need to do, or do I have a deficit?' That can help you determine what you eat next or if you need to run around the block a couple of times," said Rick Weiss, chief wellness engineer of Viocare. "We can give real-time feedback to an individual who's about to choose a food and say, 'Do you know that you could change from a sausage to a turkey sausage? This is what's going to save you."
