WAYZATA, Minn.Cargills Truvia zero-calorie sweetener made from the stevia plant knocked Sweet N Low out of  the No. 2 sugar substitute spot, according to AC Nielsen.

As reported by MarketingDaily, Truvia garnered 12.8 percent of all U.S. tabletop sugar substitute sales for the four weeks ending March 19. Splenda holds the No. 1 spot with approximately 60 percent of the market share.

Truvia sales grew by 79 percent in 2010 to $46 million, according to Zanna McFerson, assistant vice president and business director for Truvia. She predicts the trend to continue as more food and beverage companies launch more stevia-sweetened products.

In March, Fast Company ranked Cargill as of the nation's 10 most innovative food companies for perfecting a process to grow and refine sweet leaf extracts from stevia that is eco-aware and health-friendly.
