OSLO, NorwayConjugated linoleic acid (CLA, as Clarinol, from Lipid Nutrition) decreased body fat mass (BFM) in the waist and leg area and is well tolerated in healthy, overweight and obese adults. Published in The British Journal of Nutrition (DOI:10.1017/S0007114507381324), the double blind, placebo-controlled trial consisted of 118 men and women (with BMI: 2832 kg/m2). Subjects were randomized into two groups and given either Clarinol (3x4 g/d; n=59) or placebo.

CLA significantly decreased BFM at the third and sixth month predominantly in the legs, and in women with BMI .30 kg/m2compared with placebo. The waist-hip ratio decreased significantly compared to placebo. Lean body mass (LBM) increased within the CLA group; bone mineral content was not affected; and safety parameters including blood lipids, inflammatory and diabetogenic markers remained within the normal range. All changes were independent of diet and physical exercise; and adverse events did not differ between the groups. Researchers concluded supplementation with Clarinol (www.clarinol.com) in healthy, overweight and obese adults decreases BFM in specific regions and is well tolerated.
